Calgary Transit will be doing C-Train track maintenance May 21 through to May 24. Access to downtown venues will be extremely limited and teams will have to allow for extra travel time or make other transportation arrangements. Please see C-Train information at the link below:



Registration will open on January 24th 2011.

Deadline: April 21th 2011. Please note that in previous years this tournament has been full prior to March 1.

Entry Fee: $875.

IMPORTANT: Note that registrations are done on a FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE basis.
Please enter your team on the waiting list even if the category is full.

Team Eligibility

All teams must:
1) Be registered and in good standing within their own region (P/TA) and with Volleyball Canada. Out of country teams must also be registered and in good standings within their own National Federation.
2) Participate in the Provincial Championships held in their own Province or Territory, if one exists (team roster must be the same at Provincials and Nationals).
3) Meet all registration requirements.

Eligibility of players
15U Athletes must be born in 1996 or later (no exceptions).
16U Athletes must be born in 1995 or later (no exceptions).


The teams roster may consist of a maximum of 15 players and 4 coaching staff. Only 12 of those 15 players can be registered on the scoresheet during the competition and will be permitted to play any given match. These 12 athletes may vary from one match to another.


Refunds will be given (less a $100 administration fee) on withdrawals made up to the entry deadline of the event. After this time (April 21, 2011), no refunds will be given.

Technical Matters

The Official Volleyball Canada 2010-2011 Indoor Rule Book
shall govern play at the National Championships

Please review the 2010-2011 Indoor Competition for details concerning eligibility, divisions, seeding, scouting, etc. All coaches and team contacts should be aware of its content. It is available to be downloaded under
Registration Information.

Tournament venues

Courts #1-14 are located at the BMO Centre (Calgary Stampede Grounds)
Courts #15-24 are located at the Telus Convention Centre (120 Ninth Avenue SE)
Courts #25-29 are located in the Jack Simpson Gym (University of Calgary)
Courts #30-32 are located in the Red Gym (University of Calgary)
Courts #33-34 are located in the Gold Gym (University of Calgary)

Team Check-in

The Team Check-in will take place on May 20, from 10:00am to 8:00pm at the BMO Centre, in the Hall B ( located at the Calgary Stampede Grounds)

Coaches Meeting

The will be a mandatory coaches meeting on Friday, May 20 at 8:00pm in the Boyce Theatre at the BMO Centre. All head coaches must attend.

Coaching Certification

Coaches are requested to present proof of coaching certification to scorekeepers at the beginning of each match, along with their team roster. If coaching certification is not presented, officials will make a note on the scoresheet for the tournament committee to take action.


The 2011 Tournament Schedule will be posted on Monday, May 16 prior to the event. Please note that it will be tentative at this time and subject to change up until the start of the tournament.

On Saturday May 21 and Sunday May 22, there will be two Block Starting Times:

In the AM WAVE, the first matches begin at 7:30 a.m. and the last matches begin at 1:15 p.m..

On both Saturday and Sunday the AM WAVE includes:
- 16U Women (Division 1)
- 16U Women (Division 2)
- 16U Women (Division 3 and 4)
- 15U Men

In the PM WAVE, the first matches start at 2:30 p.m. and the last matches start at 8:15 p.m..

On both Saturday and Sunday, the PM WAVE includes:
- 15U Women (Division 1)
- 15U Women (Division 2)
- 15U Women (Division 3)
- 16U Men (Division 1)
- 16U Men (Division 2)

On Monday May 23rd, the playoffs take place. All teams should be prepared to play at 7:30 a.m. and throughout the day. The final match on Monday will be scheduled no later than 4:30pm.

We do our best to run on schedule, however unforeseen events may cause the tournament to run later than expected.


One-hour practice time-slots may be booked at either the Telus Convention Center or the BMO Center on Friday May 20, 2011 between 9:30a.m. and 6:30p.m. Practice times will be given on a first-come first serve basis and will only be available to teams who book IN ADVANCE. All practice time requests must be made before midnight on Monday May 2, 2011.

A minimum of 10 minutes (5-5 hitting) will be available for warm-up prior to the start of each math. Teams will be able to warm up with volleyballs in designated ball warm-up areas before each match.


Volleyball Canada certified officials will be assigned to each match. Official's coordination will be done through consultation with the Province and Territory Officials Chairs and the National Officials Chair.

Minor Officials (Scorekeepers and Linespeople)

Teams will be required to provide one linesperson and one scorekeeper for each of their matches. Alberta Volleyball will be in contact with all teams once they have registered to ensure that they register a scorekeeper prior to the event. All scorekeepers are required to go through a training session on Friday May 20 at the BMO Center.

For those scorekeepers needing further training, two classroom sessions will be available on Friday, May 20 in the Boyce Theatre at the BMO Centre. The times of the sessions are 3:00pm and 6:00pm and participants only need to attend one session.

Referee Meeting

All certified officials are requested to attend the mandatory referee technical meeting, chaired by the Referee Supervisor.

Medical Services

There will be medical attention provided for the athletes by Emergency Medical Services personnel at the BMO Centre and Telus Convention Centre. Athletic Therapists will be providing first aid and emergency care at the University of Calgary.

NEW: Please note that there will be no taping services at the 2011 Canadian Open. Teams will be responsible for supplying their own tape and taping needs.

Opening Ceremony

There will be no Opening Ceremony nor Feature Match at the 2011 Canadian West Open.

Teams are responsible for arranging their own transportation to, from, and during the championship. Please note that parking at all three venues will be pay-parking and may be limited, especially at the downtown locations.

Tournament Jury

The tournament jury is composed of a Volleyball Canada/Domestic Competition Committee (DCC) representative, Host committee representative, and the Referee Supervisor. For more information on the Jury's powers and duties, please consult the 2009-2010 Indoor Competition Guide.

Performance Bond

The $400.00 team performance bond remains the responsibility of each Provincial/Territorial Association. Ultimately, teams will be required to forward the bonds amount in the event of any infraction which affect:
1) VC Code of conduct violation
2) Accommodation/facility damages
3) Uniform regulation
4) Coaches fail to meet coaching certification requirements
5) If a team does not fulfill its competitive obligations to an event.
