Registration
Teams from the provinces of BC, AB, SK, MB, ON, and QC please register through your respective provincial association's website. Teams from NB, NS, PEI, NL, YK, NWT, and NU please register at <a href='http://www.volleyball.ca/'>www.volleyball.ca</a> Deadline: April 20th, 2009. Please note in previous years this tournament has been full prior to March 1. Registration fee: $750.00 ** There is no need to enter your team roster. It will be automatically transferred from P/TAs to VC after the respective registration deadline. (Exception: Teams from PT/As that do not currently have an online registration system will have to enter the contact information for all team members). Important Registration Information! Please note: Registrations are done on a FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE BASIS. Please enter your team on the waiting list even if the category is full.
Eligibility
All teams must: 1) Be registered and in good standing within their own region (P/TA) and with Volleyball Canada. Out of country teams must also be registered and in good standings within their own National Federation 2) Participate in the Provincial Championships held in their own Province or Territory, if one exists (team roster must be the same at Provincials and Nationals). 3) Meet all registration requirements. Eligibility of players 15U Athletes must be born in 1994 or after (no exceptions). 16U Athletes must be born in 1993 or after (no execptions).
Roster
The teams roster may consist of a maximum of 15 players and 4 coaching staff (Head Coach, Assistant Coach, Manager). Only 12 of those 15 players can be registered on the scoresheet during the competition and will be permitted to play any given match. These 12 athletes may vary from one match to another.
Withdrawal
Refunds will be given (less a $100 administration fee) on withdrawals made up to the entry deadline of the event. After this time (April 20, 2009), no refunds will be given.
Technical Matters
The Official Volleyball Canada 2008-2009 Indoor Rule Book shall govern play at the National Championships Please review the 2008-2009 Indoor Competition for details concerning eligibility, divisions, seeding, scouting, etc. All coaches and team contacts should be aware of its content. It is available to be downloaded under Registration Information.
Team Check-in
It is MANDATORY that the Head Coach completes the team check-in on Friday, May 15 at the Olympic Oval between 10:00 am and 9:00 pm. At check-in, coaches will be asked to verify their team roster, pick up player/coaches packages, and will be given all relevant event information. Teams will not be permitted to begin play without having completed the team check-in. Special consideration may be made for particular teams who need to check-in on Saturday morning; requests for Saturday check-ins must be made in advance to <a href='mailto:[email protected]'>[email protected]</a>.
Feature Match
There will be a feature match on Friday May 15th at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium (University of Calgary). All teams participating in the Canadian West Open are welcome to attend; admission to the feature match is free of charge. Please note: there will not be an opening ceremonies at this years Canadian Open; the Feature Match is in lieu of the Opening Ceremonies. Time: 7 p.m. Teams: 21U Team Alberta Men vs. 21U Team Saskatchewan Men (these teams will represent their respective province at the 2009 Canada Games in P.E.I.)
Coaches Meeting
There will NOT be a coaches meeting prior to this year's Canadian West Open. In lieu of the coaches meeting, the HEAD COACH must complete the Team Check-In. It is MANDATORY that the Head Coach completes the team check-in on Friday, May 15 at the Olympic Oval between 10:00 am and 9:00 pm. At check-in, coaches will be asked to verify their team roster, pick up player/coaches packages, and will be given all relevant event information. Teams will not be permitted to begin play without having completed the team check-in. All information normally presented at the coaches meeting will be given to the HEAD COACH at the Team Check-In.
Coaches' Certification
Coaches are requested to present proof of coaching certification to scorekeepers at the beginning of each match, along with their team roster. If coaching certification is not presented, officials will make a note on the scoresheet for the tournament committee to take action.
Tournament Schedule
The tournament schedule is available from the downloads section- colour copies of the draw (separated by division) can be found on the Alberta Volleyball website at www.albertavolleyball.com On Saturday May 16th and Sunday May 17th, there will be two Block Starting Times: In the AM WAVE, the first matches begin at 7:30 a.m. and the last matches begin at 1:15 p.m.. On both Saturday and Sunday the AM WAVE includes: - 16U Women (Division 1) - 16U Women (Division 2) - 16U Women (Division 3 and 4) - 15U Men In the PM WAVE, the first matches start at 2:30 p.m. and the last matches start at 8:15 p.m.. On both Saturday and Sunday, the PM WAVE includes: - 15U Women (Division 1) - 15U Women (Division 2) - 15U Women (Division 3) - 16U Men (Division 1) - 16U Men (Division 2) On Monday May 18th, the playoffs take place. All teams should be prepared to play at 7:30 a.m. and throughout the day. The final match on Monday will be scheduled no later than 4:30pm. We do our best to run on schedule, however unforseen events may cause the tournament to run later than expected.
Practice Times
One-hour practice time-slots may be booked at the Olympic Oval on Friday May 15, 2009 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Practice times will be given on a first-come first serve basis and will only be available to teams who book IN ADVANCE. All practice time requests must be made before midnight on Monday May 3, 2009. Please send your request to <a href='mailto:[email protected]'>[email protected]</a>. Please remember to include your age class, gender, and team name in your request!!
Warm-up Time
A minimum of 10 minutes (5-5 hitting) will be available for warm-up prior to the start of each math. Teams will be able to warm up with volleyballs in designated ball warm-up areas before each match.
Referees
Volleyball Canada certified officials will be assigned to each match. Official's coordination will be done throught consultation with the Province and Territory Officials Chairs and the National Officials Chair.
Officials' Meeting
All certified officials are requested to attend the mandatory referee technical meeting, chaired by the Referee Supervisor. Date and Time: Friday May 15, 2009, time T.B.A. Location: T.B.A.
Minor Officials (Scorekeepers and Linespeople)
Teams will be required to provide one linesperson and one scorekeeper for each of their matches. For more information on scorekeeping, please download the "Scorekeepers Guidelines" and "Scorekeepers Info Package" that can be found at the top of the page.
Medical Services
There will be medical attention provided for the athletes by Emergency Medical Services personnel. There will also be a team of athletic therapists located in the Athletic Therapy room for taping, ice, and other requirements.

Transportation
Teams are responsible for arranging their own transportation to, from, and during the championships. <strong>2009 Canadian Open Parking Information- University of Calgary</strong> Meters Meters are available for short term parking needs at a variety of locations on Campus at a cost of $0.25 per 5 minutes. Please read signage as hours may vary. Paylots Mon to Fri daytime hours. There are 4 paylots available these are lots 10, 11, 22, and 32. All paylots operate on a per entry basis. * Lot 10 - $3.75 * Lot 11 - $4.00 * Lot 32 - $4.00 Most assigned lots become paylots after 15:30 for an entry fee of $4.00. Meters and pay stations on campus are in effect from 05:00 to 22:00 daily. Parkades MacEwan Student Centre - $2.50 per 1/2 hour up to $12.00 daily max. Evening rate of $9.00 after 18:00. Art Parkade - $6.00 per entry. Evening rate of $5.00 after 18:00. Spectators
There will be an admission fee charged to spectators. Spectators can either purchase a day pass or a tournament pass (3 days). Prices are as follows (CASH only): Day Pass= $10, Adult Tournament Pass= $20 Senior Tournament Pass (>65 yrs)= $15 Youth Tournament Pass (11- 18 yrs)= $15 Child (10 and under)= Free All spectators will be held to the following Code of Conduct: 1. No Airhorns with CO2 or mechanical noise makers. 2. Violence, bad language, verbal abuse towards athletes, coaches, officials, or staff will not be tolerated. 3. Please recycle cans/bottles and place your trash in the receptacle bins provided.
Tournament Jury
The tournament jury is composed of a Volleyball Canada/Domestic Competition Committee (DCC) representative, Host committee representative, and the Referee Supervisor. For more information on the Jury's powers and duties, please consult the 2008-2009 Indoor Competition Guide.
Performance Bond
The $400.00 team performance bond remains the responsibility of each Provincial/Territorial Association. Ultimately, teams will be required to forward the bonds amount in the event of any infraction which affect: 1) VC Code of conduct violation 2) Accommodation/facility damages 3) Uniform regulation 4) Coaches fail to meet coaching certification requirements 5) If a team does not fulfill its competitive obligations to an event.
